Hej då GMO!

Amflora is an industrial potato which is neither allowed nor suitable for use as food. However, by- products of its industrial use may be fed to livestock, and the presence of up to 0.9 percent of Amflora genes in conventional food is permitted.

Companies are already distancing themselves from Amflora. A representative of the Emsland Group, a leading German starch manufacturer, told a newspaper on Wednesday that his company would not plant the potatoes because it did not want to risk losing customers. Another German starch manufacturer, Sudstarke, told a different newspaper that it would be nearly impossible to separate the genetically modified and conventional potatoes in his company’s manufacturing facilities.

GMO-potatis – snart i Sverige

Financial Times rapporterade igår om att EU-kommisionen godkänt en GMO-potatis; Amflora. Potatisen innehåller en antibiotika-resistent gen. Potatisen har utvecklats av BASF för att användas som stärkelse i pappers- och textilindustri. BASF:s plan uppges vara att börja odla potatisen i Tjeckien, Sverige och Tyskland.

I FT:s artikel kan man också läsa något som var en nyhet för mig, nämligen att Barroso flyttat GMO-beslut från miljödirektoratet till konsument- och hälsodirektoratet. Uppenbarligen i syfte att slippa jobbiga invändningar om risker för biologisk mångfald och miljö.

Det är mycket oroande. Bara för att något är säkert att äta betyder det inte att det ska godkännas. Det kan finnas andra aspekter att ta hänsyn till. I fallet GMO är min största oro inte alls förknippad med att det skulle vara farligt att äta, utan just med att det finns stora miljörisker när GMO sprider sig i naturen. Vilket inträffar så fort man odlar GMO utanför rena forskarmiljöer.
